Class Description & Dress Code

Classical Ballet:

Classical Ballet is the foundation of nearly all dance forms, and proper training takes place over several years with strict attention to the details of alignment, strength, flexibility and artistic expression. A student who excels in ballet class will benefit from the rewards of poise, elegance and discipline whether she performs on a professional level or not! Our program is carefully graded so that your child is placed in a class that is both developmentally correct as well as physically challenging. Students perform in an annual concert that allows the dancer to experience the joy of performing on stage and is the cumulative experience of the school year.

Ballet 1 (suggested ages 5-7)
Students are introduced to the basic concepts of posture, alignment, barre work and simple combinations. At the year’s end they should be able to demonstrate and use the correct French terminology for all of their acquired technique. Children who have been trained at other schools may need to begin again in this level if these concepts haven’t been properly absorbed in both the mind and body. It is normal to stay in a level for 2 or sometimes 3 years until a child is strong enough to move forward. Class is offered once a week for one hour. White leotard with any type of sleeve, pink ballet tights or white socks with pink ballet slippers and white short skirt.

Ballet 2 (suggested ages 8-10)
In this level dancers continue to improve on the beginner skills they achieved in level one, with a strong emphasis on rotation of the hips, a full 1/2 hour of barre time and an emphasis on flexibility. Dancers in this level should consider attending class twice a week. Pink leotard with any sleeve, pink tights or white socks with pink ballet slippers and pink short skirt.

Ballet 3 ( suggested ages 10-12 years)
Ballet 3 is the largest period of growth in terms of vocabulary for a young ballet dancer. In this level dancers are exposed to a tremendous variety of pedagogy , a 45 minute barre session and 45 minute center work period. This level can often take up to three years to complete, and prepares dancers for the strength needed for pointe work. Three times a week of attendance is suggested. Black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers, black or multi colored short skirt.
Advanced
Advanced Ballet and Pointe ( ages 12 and up):
Dancers in this level are training for professional placement or study in a conservatory or University. Classes are challenging and the expectation is that everyone in the room is dedicated to the artistic pursuit of the dance. Class should be attended 5 or more times per week. Pointe work is allowed when a dancer has been assessed a having enough strength and body awareness to be able to properly work “en pointe”. Any color leotard, pink tights and slippers, short skirt.

NAIAD CONTEMPORARY BALLET: by invitation only.
Dancers in the company perform at local dance festivals and compete at The Youth American Grand Prix International Ballet Competition annually. Both classical and contemporary choreography are rehearsed, and a strong ability on pointe is required. If you are interested in auditioning, please contact the school office.

Modern Dance:

Modern dance is the 20th century’s response to ballet and other art forms that had been created previously only for the most elite of audiences. From it’s very beginnings with Isadora Duncan, modern dance pioneers have ever been redefining what is dance as an art form, how it make us think, how it defines our society and our relationships with our cultures and each other. It can be very pedestrian or very intellectual and complex, depending on the vision of the choreographer. Artists like Graham, Hawkins, Humphrey, Wigman, Ailey, Limon, Cunningham, Taylor and many others shaped the roots that would be the foundation for modern techniques, and their philosophies on dance training are the primary way in which dancers learn modern dance throughout conservatories and Universities today.

At DanceNaiad we offer a course called CORE MODERN for younger students which is an education on the basics of modern dance and is a strong beginning for a lifetime of appreciation and exploration in this beautiful expression. Our ADVANCED MODERN course is for dancers with a strong classical, lyrical, or jazz foundation and who want to take their performing experience to a higher level as well as audition for higher education programs.

Belly Dance:

Belly Dance is a fusion of movement from all over the middle-east, with a strong focus on folkloric and cabaret elements. Classes begin with stretch/warm up, practice of individualized muscle movements in the hands, arms, torso, back and hips, creating travelling sequences across the floor that contain all of the practiced techniques, and choreography that allows the dancer to express their inner Goddess! Props such as Zils, veils, swords, wings and candles are used frequently. Primary technique is the Egyptian Raqs Sharqui, but Turkish and Tribal Fusion styles will be covered as well. Suggested age: High School and beyond.

WHAT WE DON’T DO: many schools offer classes where children study ballet, jazz and tap all in one class, and it can seem like you are getting more for your money. The truth is often times they spend more time changing their shoes then studying dance! We want all of our dancers to be able to dance intelligently and safely in the dance form of their choice. DanceNaiad will never put dancers on pointe before they are ready- a well prepared dancer is a safe one and a beautiful one! We do not move children into classes simply because they have friends there; dance is a serious art form and not a social event. We are happy to explain why your child is in the level they have been placed in; all of our teachers are professionals in the art of teaching dance and your child’s appropriate placement will encourage a lifetime love and respect for the art.

HIP-HOP:

Hip-hop at DanceNaiad is a seriously fun technique! Hip-hop has evolved from the fusion of breaking, locking, popping, and 80’s party dances. It can also include street dances such as krumping and jerkin’, is danced to current and past popular music, and will get you sweating and smiling at the same time! Dancers should come prepared to move with sweatpants they can slide in and loose tee-shirts they can move freely in. Sneakers or dance sneakers are preferred.

LYRICAL DANCE:

Lyrical dance is the fusion of ballet, modern, jazz and contemporary styles of dance. Often lyrical dance is described as dancing to the lyrics of a song, but it is so much more than that! Lyrical dance uses emotion to convey the dynamics of the choreography, and it can be soft and flowing or intense and energetic, depending on the choreography. Lyrical is a technique that works well in combination with Ballet and/or Modern dance study as it calls for an awareness of line, placement and technical terminology. Lyrical students should wear dance shorts or yoga pants with sports tops and tee-shirts, bare feet and hair pulled away from the face.
